The Scarlet Letter

A is for Adultery, but....

If the Puritan community did not know Hester was married, and believed her to be unmarried, then why the letter A for adultery?  Adultery, according to the bible, is sexual relations between a MARRIED woman and someone who is not her husband, no?  Or was it any kind of sex outside of marriage?

The Puritan understanding of adultry included having a baby out of wedlock.
