Why does the narrator want to make his brother into someone different in The Scarlet Ibis?

The narrator pushes Doodle because he's embarrassed.... he wants to prove that Doodle can.... always pushing the envelope.

When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk, so I set out to teach him.
