why does the son apologze for what he said about the dead in the road?

By this time the boy has become used to seeing dead corpses on the road. They had seen a charred human infant but the boy is strangely undisturbed. Later the boy apologizes for his calmness, “If we had that little baby it could go with us”. I, think this is where you mean although our page numbers may be different.
