Why is the memory of the boyʼs birth as important to the man as his wifeʼs suicide?

I think the boy's birth was always a resurrection for the man. His wife's suicide killed part of the man inside but his boy's birth is the man's only sense of redemption. His boy is the reason the man carries on in a dying world.
