Flashback is a tool for plot manipulation. McCarthy is able to subtly add information and context to the characters. We see the flashbacks of mother as an extension or even foreshadowing of their present futile circumstances. The memories serve to bind the past, present, and future into one large example of mans' defective and futile existence.
