"That the boy was all that stood between his and death?" (29) what does this mean?

The man would rather die in this world. He concedes that his wife was correct by pointing out that dying is preferable to the future in this world turned into Hell. The man just cannot bear to see his boy die: the man will live as long as he can help his boy live.
