"He'd been ready to die and now he wasn't (sic) going to and he had to think about that... This was not hiding in the woods. This was the last thing from that."(144) what does this man mean by this?

 The discovery of the bunker changed the man's temporary outlook. The food meant they would not starve for the near future and death was not as imminent as before. Sometimes death would have been preferable to hiding in the woods. This bunker was a palace compared to that.
