Can the boy in "The Road" read? Give examples of how we know.

Okay, I don't recall the boy reading. I know that he asks his father to read him a story though. Considering the boy's age, we can assume he can read but I'll have to look for an example.

So I looked, the boy carries a book so I assume he can sort of read. The father teaches him to read throughout the book. The boy seemed to have been born around the apocalypse so we can assume he didn't go to formal school.
