The albatross was a bird of good omen. The mariners had sailed into an icy patch, and their survival was in question. They couldn't make their way through the masses of ice, and then the albatross appeared. Suddenly the ice began to crack and the wind picked up; and as the albatross flew around the ship their way was made clear, enabling them to maneuver into a foggy stretch of ocean. The bird continued to follow them and was considered and omen of good luck.
