The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

What comparison does the mariner make between himself, the water snakes, and the dead man in lines 236-239?

I think he compares himself to the slimy snakes, "thousand slimy things/Lived on; and so did I", meaning that he nor the dead men were better than God's other creations.
