The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER: Spiritual state of the Mariner

The Mariner’s unconscious experiences are an important aspect of this poem. He seems to kill the albatross without thinking, and he also blesses the sea snakes without thinking. If both actions are fairly unconscious, yet one is terrible and the other is beautiful, what do the Mariner’s impulsive behaviors tell the reader about his spiritual state?
