The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Cauliflower

The Cauliflower Trust wants to ensure that its product is bought and they make profit. The cauliflower is going rotten, and this is a symbol that what the Trust has to sell is corrupted and should not hit the table of anyone in the city, let alone be sold by local grocers.

Cicero

Cicero is a town that Ui takes over late in the play as his power increases. Cicero is a symbol for Austria joining the Third Reich during Hitler's rise to power in Germany in the 1930s.

Hat

Givola is a man who wears the hats of the men he kills. The hats are a symbol of his arrogance, and as a warning to anyone who crosses him or Ui, that he will kill them.

Historical Events

Throughout the play, we see that signs appear with historical events upon them. These cards are symbols that what is being represented in satire actually occurred in Hitler's rise to power. The cards tear down the wall of theatre and present the reality of life.

Haunted

Ui is visited by the ghost of his friend, Ernesto Roma after Ui has him killed in order to gain control of Cicero. This is a symbol of the price that is paid for betrayal.
