I believe that Ishiguro is attempting to illustrate the importance if individuals making their own decisions and standing up for themselves. Stevens was never able to do these things because of the stringent rules ivolved in his job and the societal differences between he and his employer. In the end, he realizes that he never had a life of his choosing.... his life was based upon the decisions of his employers.
