The Red Badge of Courage

Why does Jim Conklin beat a fellow soldier in the beginning of chapter 2?

I see the part of the chapter where he does but I'm not sure why. Need help for school.

Upon rising the next day, the soldiers discover that the rumor is not true and they are not moving out, as Jim Conklin, the tall soldier, had said. A man from Chatfield Corners challenges Conklin and Conklin beats him up.
