Why do you think that throughout the novel Crane uses the color red to symbolize war?

Throughout the novel, the color red is a symbol of war. The "red badge of courage" symbolizes heroism, but it also symbolizes blood and death. In the chapters listed above, the color also denotes Henry's visions of hell (the pit of fire).
