Why did Henry join Wilson's water run?

"The youth went with his friend, feeling a desire to throw his heated body onto the stream and, soaking there, drink quarts."

Basically this is because they were in the chaos of battle and the men were not getting supplies. They needed water badly both for drinking and washing wounds.
