Why did Henry Fleming run away during the second part of the battle, even though he had not run during the first?

The second battle was much more intense and chaotic than the skirmish of the first battle. The second battle was filled with smoke and bullets. Henry loses his bearings and becomes terrified. He cannot tell if other men were running away or charging. In an instinct for survival, Henry runs away.
