The Red Badge of Courage

What words or phrases does the Crane use to liken Henry's wound to a wound received in battle? Why does the author make this comparison? ( Chapter 11 - 13)

From the text:

The youth's fingers had turned to paste upon the other's arm. The energy was smitten from his muscles. He saw the flaming wings of lightning flash before his vision. There was a deafening rumble of thunder within his head.

"Yeh've been grazed by a ball. It's raised a queer lump jest as if some feller had lammed yeh on th' head with a club.
