what reassurance does the youth try to give himself that he will be able to stand in battle

I think Henry has ceased thinking that battle may not come. He has stopped pretending that they will turn back or that the enemy will somehow not engage them. In chapter 3 the youth is still nervous but his emotions are shifting. Now he expects battle in his head rather than as a hypothetical situation.
