what incident start the story?

There really isn't an incident until around chapter 3. The first chapter deals with the soldiers debating when they are going to see some action (battle action). We enter Henry's, our protagonist’s head, and get to witness his various mood swings about courage and being a coward. They don't actually hear guns until around chapter 3.
