Chapter 1: From "The Red Badge Of Courage" by Stephen Crane

Henry remembers that he had dreamt of battles, and he remembers how his mother had discouraged him enlisting in the army..... she felt enlisting was foolish, and Henry up until the time he left his home thought she would give in and be proud of him, urge him to be a hero..... she never did. She does give him advice though, and he remembers it well;
"I don't know what else to tell yeh, Henry, excepting that yeh must never do no shirking, child, on my account. If so be a time comes when yeh have to be kilt or do a mean thing, why, Henry, don't think of anything 'cept what's right."
