The Red Badge of Courage

What details help to give a realistic picture of the combat experience of Civil War soldiers and of soldiers in general?

I don't really know any details about this question all I am trying to do is answer it.

The book is pretty realistic from all the things I have read, This war was a brutal one. Injuries were horrid and medical help frequently did more harm than good. Rather than treat wounds, limbs were amputated. The combat was largely man to man. The muskets were not accurate and frequently blew up in the shooters hands. The fighting was similar to WW1 with charges and retreats. A small piece of land cost thousands of lives.
