Jim Conklin, the "Tall Soldier", is a more seasoned soldier than many in Henry's company. Unlike the loud soldier, he does not brag or spout off delusions of grandeur. Jim has a calmness about him and a wisdom that Henry aspires to. Jim Conklin can be considered to be a character foil to the loud soldier. Henry takes comfort in Jim Conklin's presence and soothing words.
