In the Red Badge of Courage, why did the soldiers in the regiment think they had lost half of their men, but only realize later that only a few had been killed?

The survivors of the battle staggered back to camp without order, arriving all through the day and night. They weren't able to ascertain the true number before everyone had arrived.
