I believe that Crane does a fabulous job in his description of battles. The fact that he never actually saw the battles is not apparent in his recreations. Remember, people have been writing about battles in both fiction and non-fiction from the beginning of time. Comparing the violence in the novel to the violence in modern television and films isn't really a comparison that can be made. Computerized graphics can't even be challenged when looking at the depiction of violence.
