How does Henry react during his first battle? What is the outcome of the battle?

It's mostly chaos as men fire into the smoke and commotion. Men simply reload and fire. Henry does the same becoming part of the chaos that swirls around him. Finally the smoke clears a little and the firing recedes, they realize that the enemy had been driven back.
