Henry begins to experience the realities of war and they are ugly. All sense of heroism and valor are put to the side. He has run away from battle and discovers that most of the other men have done this as well. Henry begins to see changes in other soldiers like Wilson who is no longer a loud braggart. Henry begins to see that running away from battle was not cowardly rather than a basic instinct of survival. Henry becomes much more contemplative during these chapters.
