At the beginning of chapter 12, Crane writes "He knew at once that the steel fibers had been washed  om their hearts." What does this tell us about the men?

Here Crane uses metaphoric language to describe how the men quickly lose their illusions of bravery. In the battle, there are no "heroes" and their once courageous heart becomes vulnerable.
