Henry recalls his naiveté back home. He regarded war as a classic Greek battle or a "Homeric" journey. Henry recalls the gossip in the village (about war) and his mother's insistence that he not go. This is a familiar tale of an impressionable boy from a small town who yearns for the glory and camaraderie of war.
