The Quiet American

The Quiet American

Through the historical backdrop for the novel is the cold war, that is the ideological conflict between the USA (and its allies) and the USSR (and its allies), Greene also has a lot to say about imperialism and the ideas, such as the "civilizing mission", that underpinned the creation of European (and American) empires 50 or more years before the setting of the book. How does The Quiet American reflect this idea of the civilizing mission?
