Punctuation, assonance, alliteration and onomatopoeia key to the development of the mood of the poem.

The commas and periods throughout "Out, Out " are used as they are usually indicating both pause and end if sentence.

THere is a device called "hard caesuras" used in the latter part of the poem indicating a break in the action.

Colon in "nothing happened: day was all but done" separates ideas.
