Do you have a specific poem you are referring to?

It can't be answered briefly. Yes, Hughes has presented the animals in his poems to be extremely violent, dominating, powerful and proud. In "Pike", the fish is very cruel and strong and even can consume its own species to survive. Fox, tiger, owl, crow and so many animals become the subject of Hughes's deep observation. And the purpose of the poet is to reveal the inherent cruelty, violence, pride, viciousness etc of humanbeing. He has used anthromorphism to expose the negative qualities of man.
