why does John hate Norton?

Norton is insecure and begins doing bad things like shoplifting and acting tough to mask his feelings of inadequacy, Perhaps John sees some of these traits in himself so he decides that he hates Norton:

"He is so low on the scale of human evolution he belongs back in the age of the Cro-Magnon man."
