The Picture of Dorian Grey has gothic elements built into it. The narrative is built up suspense to its final twist. The gruesome descriptions of the portrait as well as the nasty murder lend credence to the gothic side of the story. There is also the very dark and filthy opium den that makes readers squeamish. All of these plot points and settings connect with the trademark mystery and darkness of gothic literature.
