Why is the story entitled "The Perks of Being a Wallpaper"?

The novel's title speaks to Charlie's character..... someone who takes part in the action, all while sitting on the sidelines and observing what goes on around him. Charlie is invited most everywhere (the perk) without ever really having to participate.
