“We accept the love we think we deserve.” What do you think the author/narrator meant by this?

I think he means that the love we seek is directly related to our own self-esteem. If we feel good about ourselves, we seek positive relationships and if we feel badly about ourselves, we often seek relationships to compensate for our own low self-worth. Of course nobody else can fix the way you feel about yourself: self-discovery is the only way.
