Why does Kino's the town swell and puff up with the pressure of venom?

This certainly alludes to the greed which manifests itself in the town as a result of the Pearl. Everybody, it seems, becomes infected with the illusion of wealth like a poison traveling through the town.

"The poison sacs of the town began to manufacture venom, and the town swelled and puffed with the pressure of it."
