what makes juana continues to protect kino and the pearl although kino had beaten her

 She is obviously very disturbed about being beaten by Kino but he is her husband and, in that culture, it is his right. Juana, however, also feels that the Pearl has possessed Kino's heart. She knows he is under its influence and she must try to be a strong counterbalance for the madness that the pearl has over her husband.
