I think that the Pearl brings out the darkness in Kino and hence dark objects. Kino would never have drawn his knife in anger before he found the Pearl. The threat of violence and the greed in men's hearts for the pearl are juxtaposed throughout the story. The Knife is a symbol of this violence.
