What does the quote, “The killing of a man was not as evil as the killing of a canoe” mean?

The canoe was everything to Kino's people. It was their heritage, the way they made their living, the one thing that belonged to them and allowed them to take care of themselves and their families. Without his canoe he would have nothing and could provide nothing...... this would be worse than death.
