The morning haze is a blurring effect caused by differences in air temperature: the heat from the sun and the air near the water. There is however a more important symbolic effect of the "hazy mirage" that has to do with the spiritual beliefs of Kino's people.

There was no certainty in seeing, no proof that what yousaw was there or was not there. And the people of the Gulf expected allplaces were that way, and it was not strange to them. A copper haze hungover the water, and the hot morning sun beat on it and made it vibrateblindingly.

This adds a surreal ellement to life and Kino's discovery.
