in the whole story what drives him?

There are a few levels here. I think ultimately Kino seeks to provide for his family. The shame and stress of not having the money to get his son treated by a doctor certainly fuels Kino's resolve to do better for his family. There is also a greed factor involved here. Kino, like most of us, is attracted by the thought of money and power. Both of these are relatively foreign concepts to Kino but never the less attractive to him.
