what do you think juana's shawl represents?
Juana’s shawl is her badge of womanliness and maternity. It represents her resourcefulness in its many different uses. The imagery of the shawl as a shield, both metaphorical and literal, for the baby is uses repeatedly. We see it both as a soothing blanket and protection when the child is stung, hot and killed.
Juana’s shawl represents her motherhood and her gender--her innate inclination to care for others. It reflects her ability to improvise when resources are scarce--just as her people depend on their resourcefulness to survive. The shawl's use is not particularly for warmth of the wearer, but as a sun shade for the baby, a way to transport him to the doctor, and as a way to pamper and nurse Kino's wounds.
