What did Kino mean by “He must break out of the pot that holds us in”?

This has to do with the man who broke into Kino's home and tried to steal the pearl. Kino becomes more and more determined that the pearl is his son's future, that the money it will make them will allow for his education. Kino wants his son to have the opportunities that he and Juana never had....... he wants him to break out of the societal pot they're stuck in.
