Kino says that he struck to save his life, but Juana says that this does not matter. Their canoe is vandalized and their hut is destroyed. Juana knows that, while Kino has the pearl, the family can have no peace. She knows that jealousy and greed will continue to pursue them. They have to leave or get rid of the pearl.
