The Pearl

Kino and Juana are representative of the larger community in which they live. Kino hears Juana singing and nursing Coyotito. Her songs are simple and include a hybrid of both Catholicism as well as their ancient culture. There is meaning in these simple gestures in the morning. They balance out that precarious line between good and evil that Juana is keenly aware of. Her tasks represent the simplicity of her surroundings as well as her beliefs. The ritual is a communion of sorts between Juana, her baby, and her environment.
