Steinbeck says kino was being moved by "some animal thing" what doe he mean by this?

This means that Kino was being driven by some instinct deep inside of him. He is aware that the trackers are after his family and his precious Pearl. Like an anmal he is hyper aware and ready to defend, he is acting on instinct.
