The Pearl

Notice Steinbeck's description of the setting at the end of chapter 5. Compare this to the setting that opens the story. What does the difference signify?

There is a beach scene in both of these chapters. In the setting that opens the story, the scene is peaceful and contented. Kino hears the song of the family. In chapter 5, the scene is full of menace. Kino hears the song of danger.
