I think that on a surface level, it was kino that instigates the cause and effect calamity that leads to Coyotito's death. Kino's greed envelops him. He becomes obsessed with the illusion of the grandeur the Pearl will bring his family. Kino can't let go of this dream even after it clouds over into his nightmare. On a larger level, the motif of riches coming to the most poor and the carnage that follows is common in society. People lose sight of what is important in life when they are presented with much money.
