in chapter 4, what does steinback mean by the town in like an animal

he say it like a colonial animal..the houses belched people

What the author is trying to convey is that they live in a small village and that they are packed into the houses. So tightly and at any moment they can burst. Just like an animal in a desert who has not had food in a while. He is on the hunt for something, just like the town of la Paz in the novel.
